Light Co. Explains Its Technology

Light Co. publishes almost an hour-long Vimeo video of its CTO Rajiv Laroia talking about the technology behind their multi-imager camera L16:

  1. oh my that thing is so large.. and well optics and chips.. Canon and Nikon focus heavily on colors.. what color science and processing has been done in this camera?

  2. Not sure what the benefit is aside from taking images at different focal lengths simultaneously. Looks like approach this brings more problems than solutions (costs, image processing demands, packaging, etc.).

  3. The short version is that it fused multiple Images computationaly to produce a 52 MP Photo at a variety of focal lengths (which can be chosen AFTER the shot is taken). They promise DSLR quality and have so many preorders that if you want one now it's $200 with a year wait.

    Seems to be an improvement over the Lytro in cost, size and capabilities, but not availability (unless you can win one or request a unit for Review). My Channel will be following this.

  4. Frankly, if the lens is fixed, the temperature effect from normal molding plastic lens will shift the focus away. If comes with VCM, yes, each time as the lens moves to the position, the hystersis and also the dynamic tilt will tears calibration away, unless a more precisely lens actuator needs to come into 9play. I think generally speaking, this camera will need better temperature control. Even for the AL case, which thermal deformation coeff is 27, fairly large, which is the reason seldom used in telecommunication. But I am not sure they intensively make the overlap that only 80% or 85% images are in shape and less affected by the all kinds of movements (lens, camera, reflecting mirror). Each little animal finally will drive production of this product into crazy mode.
